Don’t Do Anything Before You Do This

It doesn’t matter how much talking, marketing, selling, messaging, reaching out you do unless you

HAVE 👏🏽 PEOPLE’S 👏🏽 ATTENTION

 

This is the most important step of talking to anyone – in conversation, email, IG stories, etc. – and so many people miss this step.

Have you ever talked to a small group of people or did a presentation in class and 2 or 3 people were whispering or looking at their phones and not paying attention?

It’s the worst.

Half the time you’re talking to a person and they’re looking at you… but it doesn’t feel like they’re listening.

It’s equivalent to ‘the lights are on but nobody’s home’ vibe.

They’re looking and nodding and smiling but nothing is registering. They are clearly thinking about something else.

It’s easy to say, ‘well they should be present where they are and pay attention to the people that are talking to them.’

But what if we took it into our own hands? What if we took measures to make sure we got their attention, no matter what is going on in that head of theirs.

Let’s talk one-on-one conversations for now:

What if you approached someone with a unique question instead of a cliche, basic ‘how are you?’

Like this:

A unique question is a specific positive question to take people to their ‘happy place’.

For example, “how’s work?” could go any direction… they think about how much is on their plate or their passive aggressive boss or their gossipy coworkers and start complaining which brings them to a stressful place.

Change that to “what are you excited about right now?” People can’t help but go to a happy place. Their brain will perk up and they will start to associate you with happiness. Not to mention you will absolutely get their attention. 

Then, you are ready to share your message that you have worked so hard on and it will be received. YEY!
